In search of Episode 13...

Submitted by Robert Heron on Tue, 2005-07-12 06:20.

I'm not certain when Ep. 13 will be ready for consumption. Soon I hope. You will have a better ETA tomorrow.

I will make it a point to keep everyone updated when the release of our Sunday shows slips behind schedule.

If we cannot consistently get the show out (late) Sunday evening, then the least we can do is post a quick note saying so.

Episode 12: Guns and Racing

Submitted by Robert Heron on Fri, 2005-07-08 16:55.

On this week's show, I mentioned two places outside of the Vegas strip that I enjoyed visiting. If you feel the need for speed, take a drive out to the XPlex Racepark and enjoy a great 1-mile course with three classes of karts to choose from (mild to wild). By the second lap, you will forget about any monetary losses incurred at the craps table.

Another Firefox Favorite: Sage

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an increasingly popular mechanism for providing information you want in a clean and unified format. RSS is best know for streamlining the way people receive their daily news fix, and RSS is proving itself just as capable for tracking and distributing multimedia content.

If you have never experimented with RSS "feeds", may I suggest installing the Firefox plugin Sage.

A description from the developer's website:
Sage is a lightweight RSS and Atom feed aggregator extension for Mozilla Firefox. It's got a lot of what you need and not much of what you don't.

Revenge of the Sith (in 1080p+)

I recently posted an article on ExtremeTech discussing the technology of modern digital cinema. My opinion of Episode III aside, the latest iteration of Texas Instruments' DLP technology is delivering the best image quality you can see on the silver screen.

TI's "2K" DMD (digital micromirror device) used in the latest cinema-class DLP projectors sports a native resolution of 2048x1080 (one pixel per micromirror.) That equates to over 1.2 million more pixels than their previous 720p cinema technology.

My favorite Firefox plugin - Adblock

Submitted by Robert Heron on Mon, 2005-05-16 00:01.

We got to talking about browser security on today's Podcast, and I wanted to mention some tools I never surf without (using Firefox, of course!)

Adblock loaded with Filterset.G

Filterset.G is described in the readme as:

The guiding principle behind this filterset is efficiency. Conservative domain blocking, careful use of Regular Expressions, and a strict stance against false positives help to avoid the problems faced by other filtersets, from overspecificity to overgeneralization.

Ahhh, Mondays....

I wanted to get this blog rolling by saying hello to everyone tuning into the weekly Podcasts. We have experimented with various forms of VOIP, and our quest for decent audio quality (with 5+ users) continues.

My day job at PC Mag.com keeps me very busy -- I'm in charge of the HDTV Lab and this year is just getting started in terms of new products and technologies. I'm most excited by the industry's push for increased visual quality (color and resolution) as well as value -- Ex. the latest generation of plasma display panels (PDPs) are literally half the price of last year's models while offering significant improvements in the areas mentioned above.
